Family Letter Writing Campaign

How does the letter writing campaign work?

The easiest and most effective way to raise funds is by writing a "Dear Family and Friends" letter, explaining how Huntington’s Disease has affected your family and why it is important to raise money. You’ll find that your family and friends will be generous in supporting a cause that means so much to all of you personally. The average family raises $1,000 as a result of this campaign…most even more!

Who should you mail the letter to?

  • Family members, friends, or anyone on your holiday card list.
  • Businesses in your community which you frequent (ex. Favorite restaurant, dry cleaner, hair salon/barber shop, etc.)
  • Vendors you use at work.
  • Your insurance agent, stock broker or financial advisor.
  • Community organizations which you or your family belong.
  • Business colleagues, co-workers.
  • Family doctor, social worker, eye doctor, dentist, etc.

If you have never asked your friends or family for their support before, or if you feel as though you ask them for support constantly, you may feel like most of us do – somewhat apprehensive. Be assured that you will be encouraged by the response! Most people do give generously to charities and are happy to give to a cause they know means so much to you personally.

It may be difficult to express how you and your family’s lives have been affected by Huntington’s Disease, or you may not want to inform others of your affiliation with this disease. Your letter can be written according to how you want to send the message of HDSA’s need for research and treatment dollars. Perhaps you could ask a close friend to write the letter and send it to their affiliates. People want to get involved and help in any way they can, all you need to do is ask.

What should I include in the letter?

  • Describe what your family experienced when diagnosed with HD
  • Explain your concerns about the potential complications
  • Explain the mission of the Huntington’s Disease Society of America
  • Highlight the fact that a cure is within reach with continued funding for researchers
  • Ask for their support in making HDSA’s dream a reality by making a donation in support of your child
  • Discuss your involvement in the Orange County HD WALK FOR THE CURE
  • Be proud of your fundraising goal and announce either your personal goal or your family team’s goal
  • Indicate that all checks should be made payable to the Huntington’s Disease Society of America or HDSA
  • Be sure to include a return address; encourage them to mail checks directly to you so you can monitor your team’s progress.
  • Always be sure to say Thank You.

After the event, be sure to let your supporters know how much the event raised and how much you and/or your team raised. Thank them for their generosity and help in bringing us closer to a cure for Huntington’s Disease!

Let’s make this the last generation with HD!
